An article in today's Washington Post points out that the heavy work load of our students allows little time for pleasure reading, and seems to be turning them off to reading in general. I was fortunate to not only have time to read for pleasure, but also parents who strongly encouraged me to explore my own reading interests. Combine the pressures discussed in this article with the pervasive presence of electronic entertainment, and I find myself worried about our future literacy rates.
