I'm writing this from the lobby lounge at the Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia. My wife and I put the girls down for bed, and I decided to sit in the lobby awhile and do some reading and maybe a little writing. I brought my laptop and my book, and found a comfy armchair in the corner. When I booted up my computer to do some writing, it found a wireless network! So, now I can catch up on my e-mail, make a release note or two, and update my LJ.

My wife called me at work on Thursday to remind me that the girls didn't have any school on Monday or Tuesday. She wanted to know if I could take a couple of days off, so we could take the girls skiing, now that winter seems to have finally arrived. I checked my calendar, and found nothing scheduled, so I told her to look at our options and make some reservations. She found us a package deal at the Canaan Valley Resort that included lift tickets, so we booked a room for ourselves and another for some friends.

This morning, I put the luggage carrier on top of the minivan, loaded eight people, their luggage and skis into the van, and headed for the mountains. In spite of last night's storm the roads were clear, and most of the drive up here was uneventful. The last forty minutes or so was dicey, though, as we hit some pretty thick fog.

We arrived about 2:30 this afternoon, which was too early to check in. We did get our lift tickets, though, so we headed to the ski area. An hour later, we had rented skis for the girls and bundled them up and were ready to go. We've taken our older daughter out skiing each of the last two winters, so this was familiar ground for her. She just points her skis down the slope and away she goes! However, this was the younger daughter's first taste of skiing. She needs a lot of support and assistance, but she was all smiles after every run. Tomorrow is a full day on the slopes, and we'll probably ski at least for part of the day on Tuesday before heading home. I don't know how many challenging runs I'll get to make, but this trip isn't really for me, but for the kids. Watching them enjoy themselves is all the reward I need to make the trip worthwhile.
