Releasing Southern Cross in the land of the Southern Cross! Heheheheh.
They didn't have that SkyTower built the first time I was there, and our second trip was just passing through Auckland, driving south out of the airport and thus missing the city centre altogether. So I didn't see it that time either.
Auckland is built at a critical site - the narrowest part of that long peninsula running north. North-south access must pass through the city, and there are harbours on each side. So the Maoris called it "the maiden a thousand warriors fight over". Or words to that effect, and I vividly recall stepping out of the terminal on our first trip and seeing the hills with stepped sides where the Maori fortresses had been.
