Sounds like the poor woman has gone to pieces. Hope they get her in a hospital before she does herself or anyone else any furher damage.

I want to respond, but am unsure how...I would have been very cutting about the mother, but yoko's kindness to her made me feel yucky for my mean thoughts. I hope the child does ok!

From today's paper:

"According to the police account, Green told investigators that she probably fell asleep while driving her 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer. She was headed south toward Newport News, she told them, a nearly seven-hour journey from New Jersey, where she and her son had been visiting the boy's father. She hadn't slept in about three days, state police say she told them."

Since extreme sleep deprivation has been shown to affect judgment in ways similar to alcohol consumption, she was effectively driving impaired.

Pull over, lock the car doors and get the sleep you need but putting the child out of the car along a beltway because he won't sit down in the car...? She's not the "nice person" her neighbor describes. She's either seriously disturbed or downright evil.
