You're right about the dearth of priests starting long before girls were allowed to become altar servers. I don't remember when it happened, but certainly after I entered high school, (or I probably would have had to do it), and I've been hearing about waning seminary populations as long as I can remember. The parish I grew up in was kind of a training area for young priests - they'd stay as associate pastor for a year or two, then go off to become pastor of their own church somewhere else. Many of them came from India and Africa, because there just weren't enough Americans going into the priesthood.
I think it's interesting that this priest mentions both that the girls make good altar servers, and that it requires "a certain manly discipline."
I haven't the foggiest idea what women have to do with the abuse scandals. As far as I've heard, they weren't ever involved.
I like Pope Francis. I think he's making progress in turning the Church in a better direction. Kicking and screaming, in some cases, but maybe that's needed.
