On Monday afternoon, my wife called me at the office with the news that we'd received a truckload of firewood. A friend from the neighborhood was having an oak tree removed, and mentioned to the removal crew that we are often looking for wood. Firewood waiting to be splitSince it was cheaper for them to haul it the couple of blocks to our house and dump it than to otherwise dispose of it, they were happy to leave us with the wood.

The problem is that I've still got a pile of wood that was delivered last summer that I still need to split (shown in the picture to the right). After that load was delivered, we received a big pile of oak that had already been sitting for a few years, which we needed to split and burn before it rotted away completely. I've been trying to find time to start splitting this wood so that it will be ready to burn next winter, without a great deal of success.

New firewoodWhen I arrived home Monday evening, I surveyed the situation. The newly delivered wood was sitting at the end of the driveway, which normally wouldn't be a problem, except that we're having a party next Monday, and need all the driveway space for parking. So, the newly delivered wood would have to be stacked. Unfortunately, this would mean re-stacking the older wood, so it would take up less space and still be accessible for splitting.

Before, I could do either of these chores, we received a second truckload of wood from the tree removal service, and another neighbor sent us a third truckload from a different company! Now the driveway was covered with a pile of firewood about 25 feet long, 10 feet wide and 4-5 feet high. *Gulp*

I have since managed to re-stack the older firewood, and have stacked all the wood from the first truckload, plus a little from the second. Unfortunately, all this wood is oak, and is freshly cut, with a LOT of water content in it still. Which makes it VERY heavy. So, what I really need to find is someone (or a group) that has a strong back and a weak mind (i.e., they're willing to work for free) to help me finish stacking all this firewood before Monday. Otherwise, I may find myself laid up on Monday with a bad back...
