So, my parents are on vacation in Florida, part of their annual mid-winter escape from the snow and cold. Of course, they picked a particularly bad time to be in Florida, as it turns out. I picked up the paper over the weekend, and saw the pictures of the homes demolished by the tornado, and had to go look for a Florida map, to see where my parents were staying in relation to where the storms were. I've since heard from my parents, so they're okay, and I'm sure I'll get full details when they stop at our house on the way home next week.
Today, I see a headline in the paper that reads "Rain-Swollen Rivers Burst Banks in Jakarta, Killing at Least 20." Ack! My younger brother lives in Jakarta! Apparently, some 340,000 people have been evacuated because of the flooding, and two weeks of more rain is forecast for Indonesia. I've sent my brother an e-mail, checking up on him, but I don't know when I can expect a response. Normally, my parents talk to him when these things happen, but they're not home, so there's no news at the moment. I might try to find his phone number when I get home and see if I can't give him a call.
