In three weeks, I'll be on my way down under. (Actually I miss Aug. 4, three weeks from today, entirely as we cross the International Date Line!) I've begun trying to find out what kind of internet access I'll have at the various hotels our group has booked along the way. The websites for the hotels in Auckland and Queenstown indicate that internet access is available, but don't indicate whether it is broadband or not, or whether there is any charge for the connection. I've sent e-mails to both hotels in the hope of clarifying this before I leave. I'm not sure which hotel we're staying in in Sydney, as there are two with similar names, and my information is ambiguous. Once I confirm which one we're staying at, I'll need to send an e-mail there as well. The only remaining issue will be getting an adapter so I can plug in my laptop, as there is NO way the battery is going to survive a two week trip without recharging!
Our group is getting together for our pre-trip party on Saturday, so maybe I can get some of these questions answered there. In any event, I'll get to see who else is going on the trip with us, and maybe find out what our sightseeing excursion options are in Queenstown, so I can begin to decide how much time I want to spend sightseeing vs. skiing (after all, this is a SKI trip, at least nominally).
My wife will need to start taking her medications next week. She takes Flonase and Advair for these overseas trips to minimize her reactions to the cigarette smoke we inevitably encounter. The last thing we want to do in a foreign country is have to visit a hospital because she's had a severe asthma attack. Even if she didn't get a full-blown asthma attack, the exposure to the smoke often causes debilitating migraines when she isn't taking the medication, which would have an equally negative impact on the trip. So, as much as she dislikes the side effects of the meds, she'll start taking them next week, and will continue to take them every day until we return to the US.
