Looking back at my previous entries, I see that I haven’t written anything about how my mother-in-law is doing since just after New Year’s. Here, at least, the news is better, though we were worried for a while. After seeming to make progress through much of January, my MIL took a decided turn for the worse right before we left for a week of skiing in Steamboat, Colorado. The night before we left, we ended up calling an ambulance to take her to the hospital, as she had become extremely disoriented. While we were gone, her mental capacity diminished to the point where she couldn’t tell you who she was. It was an incredible challenge to enjoy our ski vacation while getting these updates from back home.

Eventually, it was determined that she was having a severe reaction to all the medications she was taking. She was weaned off all of them, and a new set of meds were introduced, and by the time we got home from Colorado, she was greatly improved. After being discharged from the hospital, by brother-in-law and his family took her to his house, where she continued to recover. Her progress from that point was quite impressive, and a week before Easter, she returned to her own home, where she is now living on her own again. She still has significant pain from the shingles outbreak (and it sounds like this may end up being a chronic issue for her), and her mobility still isn’t fully back to where it was before the accident, but she can walk and drive, which gives her the independence she needs to be on her own.
