What are we doing to our kids?
An article in today's Washington Post points out that the heavy work load of our students allows little time for pleasure reading, and seems to be turning them off to reading in general. I was fortunate to not only have time to read for pleasure, but also parents who strongly encouraged me to explore my own reading interests. Combine the pressures discussed in this article with the pervasive presence of electronic entertainment, and I find myself worried about our future literacy rates.

My poor step-daughter goes to school all day and seemingly has homework to do all night. And the point of that would be...??
She still likes to pleasure read, and for that I am grateful.
What worries me is her sleep deprivation and stress level in general. It's just not healthy.
She also has numerous extra-curricular activities.
Her mom says she doesn't think any of this is an issue so long as she keeps her grades up... I don't think she gets the freakin' point. And she's a P.A.! The kid just fell off the honor roll, I wonder what it will take for mom to get a clue.
Being a step-parent can be such a helpless feeling sometimes.
