Zoo pix

I've sorted through my pictures from our visit to the Brevard Zoo (see yesterday's post), and I've posted the best of the bunch at Flickr.com. One of the first things we did when we arrived was visit Africa and feed the giraffes. I switched to a telephoto zoom lens, and positioned myself to shoot across from opposite my wife and girls.

Feeding the Giraffe

This giraffe is not yet full grown, so the girls needed a boost from their mother to reach over the railing to feed him. The full grown giraffes are several feet taller, and can reach over the railing, allowing younger children to feed them.

Later, in the aviary in the Australian section, I caught these two birds having quite the animated conversation:

Finally, here is a rather comfortable looking jaguar. This was another telephoto shot, and it came out much better than I had expected. I might have to think about using this picture to make an icon...

Boy, that's one flat out jaguar!

I love the fact that the girls can reach the giraffes! That must have been a thrill!

And those look like lorikeets. Last time I was in Rockhampton, we went across to the Botanic Gardens where they have a cafe, and these brightly-coloured birds were strutting across the tables, cheerfully feeding on anything sweet. You could pour sugar or jam onto your palm and they'd climb aboard your hand and snarf it up.
